Recognition and credentials

Fellow, Design Institute of AustraliaAuthor, COURAGEFounder & Creative Partner, Banksia CollectiveFormer Global Brand Ambassador, REVĪVŌ Wellness ResortsSenior Member, Asia Designer Communication Platform

Ros has spent a career designing the environments people live inside. Her deepest work now asks a different question: what is designing the person inside them?

For decades her brief was space: hotels, retreats, homes, the quiet choreography of how a room makes a person feel. The work taught her something harder to draw. Places do not only hold our lives. They participate in them.

In 2019 a cancer diagnosis changed the brief entirely, and the same design instinct turned inward. Who are we beneath what we do? What happens to identity when the plan is taken away? Her speaking begins there: at the meeting point of outer environment and inner architecture, where design experience and lived experience agree.

01

The Architecture of Becoming

Who are you creating from?

Every decision a person makes is made from somewhere: a belief, a history, a room, a relationship, a version of themselves they have not questioned in years. This keynote makes that invisible structure visible, then asks what it would take to build differently.

02

Courage

When life changes the brief

In 2019 Ros was diagnosed with cancer. This is not a recovery story or a lesson in positive thinking. It is an honest account of fear, uncertainty, identity and the small daily decisions that remain available when the larger ones are not.

03

Creativity Is Human

Seeing differently is a capability, not a department

Creativity is usually filed under artists and designers. After decades in design, hospitality and creative leadership, Ros treats it as a human capacity: the ability to see differently, imagine an alternative and build what does not yet exist.

Who Ros speaks to

She works particularly well with rooms navigating change, identity, leadership, creativity, reinvention and the parts of human experience that do not fit neatly into a strategy deck.

Customisation

The room comes first.

No two organisations arrive with the same pressures, language or ambitions. Ros works with organisers before the event to understand the audience, the context and the outcome they are trying to create, then shapes the conversation around it.

Her story

A career in design. A life that changed the question.

The studio, and the work that travels

01

A creative life

Ros built her career in interior design and creative direction, founding her own practice and working across hospitality, residential and commercial environments. The through line was never decoration. It was how a place behaves towards the person inside it.

02

The interruption

In 2019 she was diagnosed with cancer. Everything that had organised her days, the projects, the travel, the identity built around capability, stopped being the point. She began writing, largely to keep herself company.

03

Courage

That writing became COURAGE, published in 2021. It is not a manual and it does not claim a method. It is an honest record of fear, uncertainty, gratitude and the decisions that stay available when the big ones are taken away.

04

Becoming

What followed was slower and more interesting than recovery language allows. She kept returning to one question: if environments shape people, what shapes the person doing the shaping? The Architecture of Becoming grew out of that.

05

The next chapter

Now based in Bali, Ros works through Banksia Collective and speaks internationally. The design career did not end. It changed scale. The brief moved from rooms to the person standing in them.

Banksia Collective

Where creative authority meets operational intelligence.

Banksia Collective is an independent advisory bringing property, hospitality and design into one room.

We work with owners, operators, and the principals who stand behind distinctive assets — quietly, at close range, on a small number of mandates.

The practice is designed to serve the asset and the people responsible for it — not the transaction.

The Architecture of Becoming — a six part lecture series created by Ros Banksia-Smith, FDIA

A framework for human flourishing, building creativity, communication and confidence for life and business. Created by Ros Banksia-Smith, FDIA.

Drawing on more than thirty years designing environments and experiences across Australia and Asia, alongside her own period of profound change, Ros built the framework to help people reconnect with who they are, expand what they believe is possible, and consciously design what comes next.

Design authority

She didn't study human experience from the sidelines. She spent decades designing for it.

COURAGE

I have chosen life and life has chosen me

Written during and after her cancer diagnosis in 2019, COURAGE is a personal account rather than a programme. It moves through fear, uncertainty, identity, gratitude and the practice of writing things down when there is nothing else to hold on to.

It makes no medical claims and offers no formula. Its subject is the part of a difficult year that remains a choice: how to meet what has already arrived.
